Onyx is formed as the result of a metamorphic process on limestone. On other words, it is formed by spring water or groundwater that has an abundance of calcite dissolved in it. In appearance, it is more like a gemstone with wavy veins fused together with a fluid pattern. In commercial terms, it is referred as “banded calcite”. It is the same calcite that forms limestone, marble, and travertine. Onyx also known as onyx marble, Mexican onyx and Egyptian alabaster. It is called as onyx marble since it has the same mineral content as the marble.
The most common color of onyx is a warm honey color. It can be found in different colors such as pink, cream and green, white, multicolor, blue, and orange. Onyx can be supplied in block, slab and tile form.
Uses of Onyx
Onyx can be used for kitchen countertops, backsplash, vanity, accent tiles, basins, lighting fixtures, or tabletops. The capacity of onyx to radiate light can raise everybody’s admiration in playing with light. It is mostly used for decorating interior facing and sculpturing since it is very vulnerable to weathering, gases and acidic rain
Onyx distribution in Iran
Onyx resources are mainly located in Sanandaj-Sirjan zone, mainly in Ghorveh, Neyriz, Aligudarz, Ezna, South of Kerman province (Faryab-Arzuiyeh), East Azerbaijan, Khorasan, Kerman and Kurdistan.
